Zurich Indonesia Affirms Its Sustainability Commitment through Mangrove Planting Action
In celebration of World Mangrove Day 2025, Zurich Indonesia (“Zurich”) affirms its commitment to sustainability through planting mangrove seedlings initiative. On 24th July 2025, partnering with Kitabisa, 100 of Zurich employees volunteered in Desa Muara Teluk Naga, Tangerang. This initiative is expected to create a positive and lasting impact on coastal ecosystems and empower the local community. Since 2023, Zurich has planted more than 5,000 trees and 2,000 mangroves as part of Zurich’s global commitment to support the transition to net zero emissions by 2050.
Data from the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia indicates that Indonesia is known as the world’s third-largest tropical forest which possesses the largest mangrove ecosystem, accounting for 23% of the world’s total mangroves or approximately 3.44 million hectares. However, according to the data from the Ministry of Forestry, net deforestation rate of 175,400 hectares in 2024 demonstrates the ongoing pressures on forest and coastal areas, driven by land conversion, ecosystem degradation, and low collective awareness.

Through this mangrove planting program, Zurich strives to be a part of the solution by protecting coastlines, supporting carbon absorption, and strengthening vital ecosystems that sustain local livelihoods. Mangroves can absorb up to four times more carbon than typical terrestrial forests, and play a key role in climate change mitigation, shielding coastlines from erosion, providing habitats for various species, maintaining water quality, and boosting local economies through fisheries and ecotourism.
