PJI Company of the Year 2025: 12 Innovative Student Companies Set to Showcase Green and Sustainable Business Solutions
Jakarta, 21 June 2025 — Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI), with the support of Zurich Indonesia, Z Zurich Foundation, The Starbucks Foundation, and Starbucks Indonesia, once again hosted its annual PJI Company of the Year Competition at Kota Kasablanka, Jakarta, on Saturday, 21 June 2025. This flagship event brought together 12 of the best student-run companies from senior high schools and vocational schools across 16 cities and districts in Indonesia to showcase their sustainability-focused business innovations and compete for the opportunity to represent Indonesia at the Asia Pacific entrepreneurship competition in Seoul, South Korea, next year.
Before entering the competition, the students gained hands-on experience by establishing and managing real businesses at their schools through the Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program (Student Company). This year, the program introduced design thinking and project management approaches to strengthen students’ critical thinking, leadership, and collaboration skills.
Chairman of the Executive Board of Prestasi Junior Indonesia, Pribadi Setiyanto, emphasized the importance of encouraging students to view entrepreneurship as a means of driving social and environmental change. “As global challenges grow more complex, entrepreneurship education must extend beyond simply creating products or running businesses. Students need to develop a business mindset that focuses on delivering solutions prioritizing social responsibility, sustainability, and a readiness for the future at the core,” he said.
Over the 10-month program (August 2024 – June 2025), 1,549 students from 60 senior high schools and vocational schools across Indonesia — from Medan, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Makassar to Jayapura — successfully established 60 real businesses, generating a collective turnover of IDR 525 million.
This year’s student-run businesses address key issues such as circular economy, healthy lifestyle, and climate change. These student-led businesses include:
- Uptwone SC (SMAN 21 Jakarta): recycled binders made from denim waste.
- Magnova SC (SMAN 3 Semarang): reusable unpaper towels made from bamboo fibers as an alternative to disposable kitchen tissues.
- Auterra SC (SMAN 4 Denpasar): air fresheners made from coffee waste and sandalwood.
- Youthmind SC (SMKN 11 Bandung): educational board games designed to raise mental health awareness.
- Lituhayu SC (SMAN 3 Yogyakarta): herbal shampoo made from coffee grounds and ginger formulated for sensitive skin.
The ongoing success of the Student Company program is made possible by the long-term commitment of its strategic partners: Zurich Indonesia, Z Zurich Foundation, The Starbucks Foundation, and Starbucks Indonesia. Over the past three years, they have actively invested in building a sustainable youth entrepreneurship development ecosystem.
Country Manager of Zurich Indonesia, Edhi Tjahja Negara, reaffirmed Zurich Indonesia’s commitment to youth empowerment as a key pillar of their corporate social responsibility. “For Zurich Indonesia, creating a brighter future means equipping young people with practical skills, confidence, and adaptive thinking to thrive in a constantly evolving world. Meanwhile, Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks Indonesia, Liryawati, highlighted how students’ creativity and environmental awareness align with Starbucks’ global mission to build socially impactful and environmentally responsible businesses. “Seeing the sustainable ideas developed by Indonesian students, we are optimistic that this young generation has what it takes to become future drivers of green businesses,” she added.
By combining practical learning and competitive challenges, Student Company and the PJI Company of the Year Competition have become strategic platforms for developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem that helps young people adapt to the dynamic global economy. Beyond building entrepreneurial skills at an early age, the program also encourages students to design commercial solutions that address environmental, sustainability, and technological issues. With continuous support from partners, the program continues to nurture young entrepreneurs who are ready to create positive change for their communities and the nation's future.
